Porsche Introduces the 963 RSP: A Road‑Legal Hypercar Built from the 963 LMDh
Porsche has revealed the 963 RSP, a one‑off, road‑legal hypercar based on its dominant 963 LMDh prototype. Created as a tribute to the road‑going 917 commissioned by Count Rossi 50 years ago, the RSP blends uncompromising race DNA with just enough modifications for limited road use
A true race car at heart
Mechanically, the RSP is nearly identical to its race counterpart. Built on the carbon‑fiber monocoque with Xtrac’s 7‑speed sequental gearbox, it retains the 4.6‑liter twin‑turbo V8 (derived from the 918 Spyder) and hybrid system, producing roughly 670 hp Key race components – pushrod suspension, carbon‑ceramic brakes, race turbos – remain intact; the car merely rides slightly higher with softened dampers, and electronics are tuned for street driving
Street‑legal upgrades To comply with minimal road requirements (via France’s “W plate” and the US show‑and‑display exemption), Porsche added turn signals, headlights, taillights, a horn, wet‑weather Michelin tires, covered wheel arches, and a license plate mount
Heritage and design nods Painted in “Martini Silver” like the original Count Rossi 917 and finished in bespoke carbon/Kevlar, the RSP carries clear design tributes. The interior features tan leather and Alcantara, a carbon driver’s seat, a removable steering wheel and helmet storage, plus a 3D‑printed cup holder manufactured to match road‑use quirks
Limited, but symbolic Built for Roger Searle Penske (the “RSP” initials), the model remains a single example and will not be replicated. Despite being called road‑legal, Porsche states that it’s only allowed on public roads under special dispensation—not as a fully homologated vehicle
What’s next? The 963 RSP made its debut ahead of the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans and will go on display at the Porsche Museum and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July Though no production run is planned, Porsche hasn’t entirely ruled out future recreations based on interest .
