Taking charge

It was Lando Norris lifting the silverware, after an almost “boring” display of perfect tire management, taking back the lead from Charles Leclerc who had to give the position back after cutting turn 1, from there on steadily building up his advantage over the race. Now leading the world championship.

Turn 1 overall was a messy one, Max Verstappen taking to the grass after getting squeezed and locking his wheels. The current world champion clashed hard with his 2021 rival Lewis Hamilton in the opening stages. Both fighting hard to keep their position early on in the race, with both having cut a corner, the FIA decided to penalize the Ferrari driver as he gained too big of an advantage rejoining the track, as well as not taking the mandatory escape road. Max Verstappen with an incredible solid hunt, as after his pitstop he made his way from 9th to finish 3rd. Almost taking second from Charles Leclerc, but not getting the chance as a last lap Virtual Safety Car got triggered by Carlos Sainz having to park his car with an engine failure.

Oliver Bearman with a magnificent 4th, continuing his strong after an already solid 9th last race. In the end really having to push his Haas to the limit with Oscar Piastri who was rapidly catching up on fresher rubber.

George Russell getting held up by teammate Kimi Antonelli, this gave the chance for Oscar Piastri to close the gap with the Mercedes driver. The Brit frustrated when informed about his tire temperatures replying “I’ve got a f#cking car up my ass”, Mercedes relaying this message to his teammate, making way in the following corners. McLaren showed that racing still is a team sport, as their lightning fast pitstop made sure Piastri left the pitlane in front of the Italian. In the end he also overtook Russell, braking later and taking the inside into turn 1 lap 60.

Lando Norris takes the lead in the race for the title, and now with only 4 races to go making it closer than ever between the 2 McLaren drivers. A lot can happen in 4 races, not to forget that there is still a certain dutchman who is still in contention to add a 5th title to his trophy cabinet. But it will be interesting to see what will come as the remaining circuits look to be a bit more preferable for the Red Bull team, already having experience winning at these circuits in recent years.
